The Nets are 10-2 under P.J. Carlesimo and could be 11-1 if they bothered to get back in transition Wednesday in Atlanta, when the Hawks scored 29 fast-break points. Brooklyn’s next eight games could be season-defining. This week brings four road games, including trips to New York, Memphis and Houston. Then it’s a four-game homestand, with visits from the Heat, Bulls and Lakers.

Buckle up. The toughest schedule stretch of the P.J. Carlesimo era starts with Monday’s holiday visit to MSG and continues with stops in Minnesota, Memphis and Houston before our next batch of rankings … with a homestand soon after that including visits from the Heat, Bulls and Lakers.

Somewhere, Mikhail Prokhorov is laughing it up on a jet ski. The Nets are 9-2 under P.J. Carlesimo, but that’s not necessarily because the coach is getting more out of Deron Williams. Instead, he’s squeezing the pulp out of Brook Lopez, who has reminded us just how good he can be when he’s healthy. Since Carlesimo took over, Lopez has averaged 20.6 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. Lopez is playing like a potential reserve candidate for next month’s All-Star Game in Houston.

Surprise! P.J. Carlesimo is a great coach again.
