Nets acquire Xavier Thames with the 59th pick in the 2014 NBA Draft for cash considerations

The way Billy King came alive at the end of the 2014 NBA Draft was bit unexpected with the limited roster spots that the Nets have but that didn’t stop him from buying the final two draft picks of this draft.

The Nets acquired the draft rights to the 59th pick, Xavier Thames, from the Toronto Raptors in exchange for cash considerations of $500k.

Thames, 23 years old and 6’3, was a four year guard from San Diego State who averaged 17.6 and 3.2 assists and 1.6 steals his senior year.

Thames was worked out this past week at the PNY Center for the Nets and will have a great chance to prove himself on the Nets summer league team in Orlando in July.

Scouts say:

Thames is an improving perimeter shooter, especially off the catch when he time to get set. He has good form on his jumper, though his release could be quicker. Thames is a very good on-ball defender, positioning himself well between his man and the basket, and having strong lateral movement, even over longer distances.  Thames is a very good on-ball defender, positioning himself well between his man and the basket, and having strong lateral movement, even over longer distances. After spending time sharing backcourt minutes with Chase Tapley and Jamaal Franklin two seasons ago, Thames emerged as the clear leader of a San Diego State team which won 31 games and advanced to the Sweet 16 this past season.
