Nets 77 – Grizzlies 101

The Memphis Grizzlies came out and hit the Brooklyn Nets in the chin right from the opening tip and the Nets did not respond. Marc Gasol started the game like he was playing horse and had eight of first 10 points for the Grizzlies while Brook Lopez had four quick points for the Nets. Early in the game it was “The Center Show” as both centers controlled the game offensively. The Grizzlies dominated the Nets on the glass 15-to-8 and had six offensive rebounds. Gasol ended the first with 12 points and six rebounds to Lopez’s nine points. The Grizzlies were up 32-22 after one bad quarter of play.

The game turned into a layup clinic in the second when the Grizzlies went on an extended run to start quarter and hit 11 out of 12 shots. Gasol continued to throw up one-handed jump hooks and watched everything fall. The Nets looked lost on defense all half and the Grizzlies had at least 12 dunks and/or layups. A 25-11 run to close the first half by the Grizzlies gave them a 67-44 cushion at halftime. The Grizzlies hit 12-of-16 field goals in the second quarter and scored 44 points in the paint for the half. Memphis shot 60.4 percent for the half led by Gasol’s 20 points and 7 rebounds. Lopez helped keep the Nets alive with 15 points and three rebounds to go with two blocks.

More easy baskets for the Grizzlies to start the second half and the Nets quickly went down by 30. Grizzlies got a little complacent and the Nets showed a little fight with better defense and intensity. The Nets went on a 23-9 run to end the third when Deron Williams went down when he went knee to knee with Darell Aurthur. Williams did not return to the game. The quarter ended with the Nets down 85-67.

Nets had plenty of chances to make a run and bring the game to a manageable score but could not hit a shot to put the pressure on the Grizzlies. There was seven or eight times down the floor in a row when they could not hit a 3-pointer. The Nets ended 3-for-17 from 3-point range and could not get it closer than 18 to lose 101-77.

GAME CHANGER: The Grizzlies scored 44 points in the paint in the first half to totally demoralize the Nets and take control of the game.

STAT OF THE NIGHT: The Nets gave up a season high 67 points in the first half and allowed the Grizzlies to shoot 60.4 percent from the field.
