The Brooklyn Nets made it official late last night that they had acquired the Sacramento Kings guard Marcus Thornton for Jason Terry and Reggie Evans.

The Nets released the following on the acquisition.

“Marcus is a proven scorer in this league,” said Billy King. “He is a young talent who will help us in the backcourt.”

A five-year NBA veteran, Thornton comes to Brooklyn with season averages of 8.3 points and 2.7 rebounds in 46 games (26 starts) for the Kings. Selected 43rd overall in the 2009 NBA Draft by the Miami Heat, the LSU product began his career in New Orleans, where he played for one and a half seasons before a 2010-11 midseason trade sent him to Sacramento.

Thornton averaged a career-best 18.7 points in 2011-12 playing and starting in 51 games for the Kings. Through 315 career games, including 125 starts, Thornton holds NBA averages of 13.5 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team for the 2009-10 season.

Thornton will not wear his customary #23 and will instead wear #10 with the Nets and will be with the team and available to play on Saturday night when Brooklyn takes on the Golden State Warriors in the second game of this six-game circus road trip.

Thornton should give the Nets a nice scoring punch off the bench and will certainly give them more than what Terry and Evans have given the Nets to date.  He is a natural scored that can fill it up at a moments notice as we saw him drop 42 points on the Indiana Pacers earlier this season.  He did average almost 19 points per game in 2011 so the ability to score is there for sure.

Brooklyn will take on Thornton’s $8.6 million salary next season to solidify their bench while shedding next year’s salaries for Terry ($5.9 million) and Evans ($1.8 million) in the deal.

This move is not earth shattering although it does help Brooklyn with roster spots and brings them a young 26 year old scorer for the playoff run.

He and his agent have expressed happiness with this trade and a chance for him to prove himself again.
